Who of us would not know straight away all the answers that one could give here, and with which one could easily escape the responsibility for those people [who come to hear our preaching, but confess with sorrow that we make their access to Jesus too difficult]?

But would it not be also an answer [i.e. true], if we questioned ourselves, whether we ourselves often step in the way of the word of Jesus, which we perhaps hang too strongly on certain formulations [or] on a certain type of preaching specific to its time, its place, and its community structure, which we perhaps really preach too “dogmatically” and too little “towards life”, during which we always like to say certain thoughts of Scripture again and again, yet at the same time pass by other words too carelessly, in that we still preach too much of our own opinions and beliefs and too little of Jesus Christ?

[W: Ouch. Help me to preach “towards life”, with my brothers and sisters sitting before me and my Bible. Help me not to be bound to the spirit of the age, or swayed by current affairs, or the sound of my own voice. How tragic if my church came away with my own opinions and beliefs and not Christ?]

There is nothing which would contradict our own aim deeper, and which at the same time would be fatal [lit: perishable] to our proclamation, as when we burden the weary and heavy-laden, who Jesus calls to him (Mt 11:28), with difficult man-made statutes and so again drive them away from Him.

But because here general questions and self-accusations are no little help, let us [go] to the Scriptures, to return the Word and call of Jesus Christ himself. Here, we search out of poverty and narrowness of our own convictions and questions, the wideness and the richness that we are given in Jesus.

[W: Sola Scriptura – God’s Word as our highest authority – is a far better foundation than being imprisoned to parroting a government byline, or a popular view, or the “poverty and narrowness” of our own questions and beliefs. Give me Jesus!]
