(A daily dose of Doktor Dietrich. Translation mistakes all mine!)

Wir wollen von dem Ruf in die Nachfolge Jesu sprechen. Laden wir damit den Menschen ein neues, schwereres Joch auf?
We want to speak of the call to [lit: in the] follow Jesus. Are we burdening [lit: loading up] the people with a new, difficult yoke?
Sollen hier zu all den Menschen-satzungen, unter denen Seelen und Leiber seufzen, noch härtere, unerbittlichere hinzugefügt werden?
Should here, to all the man-made statutes, under which souls and bodies sigh, be added still harsher, more unrelenting [ones]?
Soll mit der Erinnerung an die Nachfolge Jesu nur noch ein spitzerer Stachel in die beunruhigten und verletzten Gewissen getrieben werden?
Shall the reminder of following Jesus only yet drive a sharper sting into the troubled and hurt consciences?
Sollen hier etwa zum soundsovielten Male in der Kirchengeschichte unmögliche, quälerische, exzentrische Forderungen aufgestellt werden, deren Befolgung wohl ein frommer Luxus einiger weniger sein mag, die aber von dem arbeitenden, umm sein Brot, um seinen Beruf, um seine Familie sorgenden Menschen als das gottloseste Gottversuchen verworfen werden müssen?
Should it be set here for the umpteenth time in the history of the church impossible, torturous, [and] eccentric demands; which following [it] may well be a pious luxury of certain few, but which must be rejected by the working man caring for his bread, for his job, for his family, as the ungodliest God-given trial?
[W: I’m still not convinced about this translation… what is a “Gottversuchen”? The ungodliest God-given trial doesn’t seem to make sense.]
Geht es denn der Kirche darum, eine geistliche Gewaltherrschaft über die Menschen aufzurichten, indem sie eigenmächtig unter Androhung irdischer und ewiger Strafen setzt und befiehlt, was alles ein Mensch zu glauben und zu tun habe, um selig zu werden? Soll das Wort der Kirche neue Tyrannei und Vergewaltigung über die Seelen bringen? Es mag ja sein, daß manche Menschen sich nach solcher Knechtung sehnen. Aber könnte die Kirche jemals einem solchen Verlangen dienen?
Is that what the church is about, to establish a spiritual tyranny over the people, in that they arbitrarily under threat of earthly and eternal punishment, set and command, what every one person has to believe and to do? Should the word of the church bring a new tyranny and rape over souls? It may well be, that some people yearn for such subjugation. But can the church ever serve such a demand?
[W: By 1937, The Nazi regime had passed hundreds of Anti-Semitic laws, and the church was pressured to conform its beliefs and practices accordingly. Bonhoeffer here is clear: no church can serve such a demand. But for the church to bow to the Nazi state’s demands is to invite a new kind of spiritual tyranny and abuse. He and others, would not bow to their demands, forming the Confessing church.]
