Wir sind wohl auch der Meinung, daß ganz andere Menschen das Wort hören und auch ganz andere Menschen sich wieder abwenden würden, wenn es dazu käme, daß Jesus selbst und Jesus allein mit seinem Worte in der Predigt unter uns wäre.
We are arguably of the opinion too, that one group of people would hear the Word, while a completely different group would turn away again, if it came to it that Jesus himself and Jesus alone with His word were to be among us in the preaching.
Nicht als wäre die Predigt unserer Kirche nicht mehr Gottes Wort, aber wieviel unreiner Klang, wieviele menschliche, harte Gesetze und wieviele falsche Hoffnungen und Tröstungen trüben noch das reine Wort Jesu und erschweren die echte Entscheidung! Es is doch nicht nur die Schuld der anderen, wenn sie unsere Predigt, die ja gewiß ganz allein Christuspredigt sein will, hart und schwer finden, weil sie belastet ist mit Formeln und Begriffen, die ihnen fremd sind.
[It is] not as [if] the preaching in our churches is no longer God’s Word — but how much impure sound, many how man-made [and] harsh laws, and many false hopes and consolations still cloud the pure Word of Jesus and complicate [lit: make difficult] the true judgement!
[W: Most problems in gospel ministry typically comes not from what’s been said, but what hasn’t been said. Legalistic preaching is dangerous not necessarily because the preacher explicitly denies the pure word of Christ (the gospel), but often because it is sidelined and clouded it over. What do I preach that’s of first importance? Is it Christ? (1 Cor 15:1-3) Do I major on His teaching (e.g. Matt 5-7), or my own opinions? Lord, help me not to cloud the pure Word of Christ in my life and service. Help me not to be scared that Jesus’s words divide. Brother will betray brother (Mt 10:21), but You will be faithful to the end with us.]
