Some Bonhoeffer thoughts on the cross: Jesus’s love for his enemies.

Previously:

But still the question presses us: what the call to follow Jesus could mean for the worker, for the businessman, for the farmer, for the soldiers, the question, whether an unbearable dichotomy is not brought into existence of man and Christian [who is] working in the world.

Is the Christianity of following Jesus not after all a thing for a too small a number of people? Does it not mean a pushing back of the great masses of people, a contempt of the weak and poor?

But is this not to just to deny it, the great mercy of Jesus Christ, who came to the sinners and tax collectors, the poor and weak, the wandering and despairing?

Was sollen wir dazu sagen?

What should we say about this? Are there few or are there many, who belong to Jesus?

Jesus died on the cross alone, abandoned by his disciples. Next to him hung not two of his faithful, but two murderers. But under the cross they all stand, enemies and believers, doubters and fearful, scoffers and the overcomed; and to all of them and their sin, applied in this hour was the prayer of Jesus for forgiveness.

The merciful love of God lives among its enemies. It is the same Jesus Christ who calls us with grace in his discipleship, and whose grace made the thief on the cross in his last hour blessed.
