Wohin wird der Ruf in die Nachfolge diejenigen führen, die ihm folgen? Welche Entscheidungen und Scheidungen wird er mit sich bringen? Wir müssen mit dieser Frage zu dem gehen, der allein die Antwort weiß. Jesus Christus, der Nachfolge gebietet, weiß allein, wo der Weg hingeht. Wir aber wissen, daß es ganz gewiß ein über alle Maßen barmherziger Weg sein wird. Nachfolge ist Freude.
Where will the call to discipleship lead those who follow him? What decisions and separations will it bring with it? We must go with this question to him, who alone knows the answer. Jesus Christ, who demands discipleship, knows alone, where the way goes. But we know, that it most certainly will be a merciful path beyond all measure. Discipleship is joy.
Es scheint heute so schwer zu sein, den schmalen Weg der kirchlichen Entsheidung in aller Gewißheit zu gehen und doch in der ganzen Weite der Christusliebe zu allen Menschen, der Geduld, der Barmherzigkeit, der “Phil-anthropie” Gottes (Tit. 3,4) mit den Schwachen und Gottlosen zu bleiben; und doch muß beides beieinander sein, sonst gehen wir Menschenwege.
It appears today to be so difficult, to go the narrow path of ecclesiastical decision with all certainty, and yet in the whole broadness of Christ’s love for all people, of patience, of mercy, of the “loving-kindness” of God (Titus 3:4), to remain with the weak and ungodly; and yet both must be together, otherwise we will go the way of men.
[W: When Bonhoeffer wrote this, Christians in Germany faced a dilemma as the state church became more and more captive to the government’s anti-Jewish, Hitler-loyal ideology. How can one take part the church as an institution, while showing God’s love for all peoples? Bonhoeffer wrestled with this personally as he had close friends who were pastors of Jewish ethnicity, who were singled out by anti-Jewish regulations that were being enacted in the state Protestant church. Following Jesus wholeheartedly means upholding the broadness of Christ’s love, patience and mercy for all people, that they might hear the good news of his death on the cross for his enemies.]
Gott schenke uns in allem Ernst des Nachfolgens die Freude, in allem Nein zur Sünde das Ja zum Sünder, in aller Abwehr der Feinde das überwindende und ge-winnende Wort des Evangeliums. “Kommet her zu mir alle, die ihr mühselig und beladen seid; ich will euch erquicken. Nehmet auf euch mein Joch und lernet von mir; denn ich bin sanftmütig und von Herzen demütig; so werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seelen. Denn mein Joch ist sanft und meine Last ist leicht.” (Matth. 11:28 ff.)
God grant us in all the seriousness of discipleship, joy, in every “No” to sins, the “Yes” to the sinner, in every defence against the enemy the overcoming and victorious word of the gospel. “Come here to me, all you who are weary and burdened, I will refresh you. Take upon you my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly of heart; there you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matt 11:28 ff.)
