Billige Gnade heißt Rechtfertigung der Sünde und nicht des Sünders. Weil Gnade doch alles allein tut, darum kann alles beim alten bleiben. “Es ist doch unser Tun umsonst”. Welt bleibt Welt, und wir bleiben Sünder “auch in dem besten Leben”.
Cheap grace means justification for sin and not of the sinner. But because grace alone does everything, therefore everything can stay as before [lit: old]. “But our action is in vain.” The world remains the world, and we remain sinners “even in the best life”.
Es lebe also auch der Christ wie die Welt, er stelle sich der Welt in allen Dingen gleich und unterfange sich ja nicht — bei der Ketzerei des Schwärmertums! — unter der Gnade ein anderes Leben zu führen als unter der Sünde! Er hüte sich gegen die Gnade zu wüten, die große, billige Gnade zu schänden und neuen Buchstabendienst aufzurichten durch den Versuch eines gehorsamen Lebens unter den Geboten Jesu Christi!
So let the Christian then live like the world, who surrenders himself to the world in all things equally, and does not interfere himself with it — with the heresy of enthusiasm! — under grace to lead a different life than under sin! He is wary himself to rage against grace, the great cheap grace to defile and to raise up a new literalism through the attempt of an obedient life under the commandment of Jesus Christ!
Die Welt ist durch Gnade gerechfertigt, darum — um des Ernstes dieser Gnade willen!, um dieser unersetzlichen Gnade nicht zu widerstreben! — lebe der Christ wie die übrige Welt!
The world is justified by grace, therefore — for the sake of the seriousness of this grace!, not to resist this irreplaceable grace! — let the Christian live like the rest of the world!
[W: Bonhoeffer takes, for argument’s sake, the idea of cheap grace to its logical conclusion. The (flawed) argument of the antinomian is that Christians can receive grace and live no differently. But Bonhoeffer will continue to argue this is untrue.]
