Gewiß, er würde gern ein Außerordentliches tun, es ist für ihn unzweifelhaft der schwerste Verzicht, dies nicht zu tun, sondern weltlich leben zu müssen. Aber er muß den Verzicht leisten, die Selbstverleugnung üben, sich von der Welt mit seinem Leben nicht zu unterscheiden.
Certainly, he would like to do an extraordinary [thing], it is for him undoubtedly the most difficult sacrifice, not to do this, but to have to live worldly. But he must then perform a sacrifice, to practice self-denial, not to distinguish himself from the world with his life.
Soweit muß er die Gnade wirklich Gnade sein lassen, daß er der Welt den Glauben an diese billige Gnade nicht zerstört. Der Christ aber sei in seiner Weltlichkeit, in diesem notwendigen Verzicht, den er um der Welt — nein, um der Gnade willen! — leisten muß, getrost und sicher (securus) im Besitz dieser Gnade, die alles allein tut.
As far as [it goes] he must let grace really be grace, that he does not destroy the faith of the world in this cheap grace. But the Christian in his worldliness, in this necessary sacrifice, which he for the world — no, for the sake of grace! — must perform, confident and secure (securus) in the possession of this grace, which alone all things does.
Also, der Christ folge nicht nach, aber er tröste sich der Gnade! Das ist billige Gnade als Rechtfertigung der Sünde, aber nicht als Rechtfertigung des bußfertigen Sünders, der von seiner Sünde läßt und umkehrt; nicht Vergebung der Sünde, die von der Sünde trennt.
So, let the Christian not follow, but may he take comfort himself in grace! That is cheap grace as justification for sin, but not as justification of the repentant sinner, who from his sins leaves and turns from; not [as] forgiveness of sin, which separates from sin.
Billige Gnade ist die Gnade, die wir mit uns selbst haben.
Cheap grace is the grace, which we have with ourselves.
Billige Gnade is Predigt der Vergebung ohne Buße,
ist Taufe ohne Gemeindezucht,
ist Abend-mahl ohne Bekenntnis der Sünden,
ist Absolution ohne persönliche Beichte.
Cheap grace is preaching of forgiveness without repentance, it is baptism without church discipline, it is the Lord’s supper without confession of sin, it is absolution without personal confession.
Billige Gnade ist Gnade ohne Nachfolge,
Gnade ohne Kreuz,
Gnade ohne den lebendigen, menschegewordenen Jesus Christus.
Cheap grace is grace without discipleship,
grace without the cross,
grace without the living, incarnate Jesus Christ.
