The world was Christianised, the grace had become common knowledge to the Christian world. It was cheap to have. Yet the Roman (Catholic) church preserved [just] a remnant of the initial knowledge [of costly grace].

It is of vital importance, that monasticism did not separate from the church and that monasticism withstood the wisdom of the church. Here was, at the edge of the church, the place, where knowledge was kept awake: that grace is costly, that grace includes discipleship (lit: following). People left for the sake of Christ everything that they had, and tried to follow the strict commandments of Jesus in daily practice. So the monastic life became a living protest, against the secularisation of Christianity, against the cheapening of grace.

But by the church letting this protest endure and not come to a final outbreak, it relativised it, indeed it even gained from it the justification fof its own secularised life; which now the monastic life became the special achievement of individuals, to which the majority (lit: mass) of church people could not be obligated.
