Was unter den besonderen Umständen und Erleichterungen des klösterlichen Lebens als Sonderleistung geübt wurde, war nun das Notwendige und Gebotene für jeden Christen in der Welt geworden. Der vollkommene Gehorsam gegen das Gebot Jesu mußte im täglichen Berufsleben geleistet werden. Damit vertiefte sich der Konflikt zwischen dem Leben des Christen und dem Leben der Welt in unabsehbarer Weise. Der Christ war der Welt auf den Leib gerückt. Es war Nahkampf.
What was practised under the special circumstances and conveniences of the monastic life as a special-achievement, now became a necessity and command for each Christian in the world. The complete obedience to the command of Jesus had to be achieved in [the] daily vocation of life. With it deepened the conflict between the life of the Christian and the the life of the world in an unforseeable way. The Christian [and] the world came face to face (lit: was moved to the body of the world). It was close combat (lit: near-struggle).
Man kann die Tat Luthers nicht verhängnisvoller mißverstehen als mit der Meinung, Luther habe mit der Entdeckung des Evangeliums der reinen Gnade einen Dispense für den Gehorsam gegen das Gebot Jesu in der Welt proklamiert; die reformatorische Entdeckung sei die Heiligsprechung, die Rechtfertigung der Welt durch die vergebende Gnade gewesen.
One cannot more fatally misunderstand Luther’s act than with the opinion, [that] Luther had, with the discovery of the gospel of pure grace, proclaimed a dispensation of the obedience (i.e. to discard) to the command of Jesus in the world; the Reformation discovery had been the canonisation, the justification of the world through the forgiving grace.
Der weltliche Beruf des Christen erfährt vielmehr seine Rechtfertigung für Luther allein dadurch, daß in ihm der Protest gegen die Welt in letzter Schärfe angemeldet wird. Nur sofern der weltliche Beruf des Christen in der Nachfolge Jesu ausgeübt wird, hat er vom Evangelium her neues Recht empfangen.
The secular vocation of the Christian undergoes, rather, its justification solely through this: that in it was registered the protest against the world in final sharpness. Only insofar as the worldly vocation of the Christian is practised in the following of Jesus, has he from the gospel received a new law.
Nicht Rechtfertigung der Sünde, sondern Rechtferti-gung des Sünders war der Grund für Luthers Rückkher aus dem Kloster. Teure Gnade war Luther geschenkt worden. Gnade war es, weil sie Wasser auf das durstige Land, Trost für die Angst, Befreieung von der Knechtschaft des seblts-gewählten Weges, Vergebung aller Sünden war.
Not the justification of sin, but the justification of the sinner was the reason for Luther’s return from the monastery. Costly grace had been given to Luther. It was grace, because it was water for the thirsty land, comfort for the fearful, deliverance from the slavery of the self-chosen way, forgiveness for all sins.
