Teuer war die Gnade, weil sie nicht dispensierte vom Werk, sondern den Ruf in die Nachfolge unendlich vershärfte. Aber gerade worin sie teuer war, darin war sie Gnade, und worin sie Gnade war, darin war sie teuer. Das war das Geheimnis des reformatorischen Evangeliums, das Geheimnis der Rechtfertigung des Sünders.
Costly was the grace, because it did not dispense of work, but infinitely toughened the call of discipleship. But precisely since it was costly, there was grace, and precisely since there the grace was, it was costly. This was the mystery of the Reformation gospel, the mystery of the justification of sinners.
Und dennoch bleibt der Sieger der Reformationsgeshichte nicht Luthers Erkenntnis von der reinen, teuren Gnade, sondern der wachsame religiöse Instinkt des Menschen für den Ort, an dem die Gnade am billigsten zu haben ist. Es bedurfte nur einer ganz leichten, kaum merklichen Verschiebung des Akzentes, und das gefährlichste und verderblichste Werk war getan.
And nevertheless, the victor of the Reformation-story remains not Luther’s discovery of pure, costly grace, but the vigilant religious instinct of people for the place, where grace is to be had the cheapest. It needed only a very light, barely noticeable shift of emphasis, and the most dangerous and ruinous work was done.
Luther hatte gelehrt, daß der Mensch auch in seinen frömmsten Wegen und Werken vor Gott nicht bestehen kann, weil er im Grund immer sich selbst sucht. Er hatte in dieser Not die Gnade der freien und bedingungslosen Vergebung aller Sünden im Glauben ergriffen. Luther wußte dabei, daß ihm diese Gnade ein Leben gekostet hatte und noch täglich kostete; denn er war ja durch die Gnade nicht dispensiert von der Nachfolge, sondern erst recht in sie hineingestoßen.
Luther had taught, that the people even in his most pious ways and works cannot stand before God, because he always searches in himself for reason. He had in this plight grasped the grace of free and unconditional forgiveness for all sinners by faith. Luther knew that in this grace a life had been spent, and still cost [him] daily, for he was indeed by grace not dispensed of discipleship, but rather all the more plunged into it.
[W: I was chatting with a friend in East Asia about how Luther and Bonhoeffer understood the cost of discipleship. He mentioned that this too is a truth that East Asians must grapple with when they hear the gospel. There, there is grace without Nachfolge, which remains wedded to institutions captive to a corrupt ideology. Lord, help us not to look for the cheapest grace that costs nothing, but see and embrace with our brother Bonhoeffer (中文：朋霍費尔 / 潘霍華) the cost of following Jesus in our moment of history.]
