[After explaining and denouncing “cheap grace” – an understanding of Christian faith that is merely nominal, rather than genuinely following Jesus, Bonhoeffer turns to speak to those who wish to follow Jesus and understand costly grace in Him.]
Einfach, weil wir es nicht leugnen wollen, daß wir nicht mehr in der rechten Nachfolge Christi stehen, daß wir wohl Glieder einer rechtgläubigen Kirche der reinen Lehre von der Gnade, aber nicht mehr ebenso Glieder einer nachfolgenden Kirche sind, muß der Versuch gemacht werden, Gnade und Nachfolge wieder in ihrem rechten Verhältnis zueinander zu verstehen. Hier dürfen wir heute nicht mehr auswei-chen. Immer deutlicher erweist sich die Not unserer Kirche als die eine Frage, wie wir heute als Christen leben können
In other words (lit: simply), because we do not wish to deny, that we no longer stand in right discipleship of Christ, that we are fully members of an orthodox church of the pure doctrine of grace, but no longer members alike of a church with true discipleship (lit: of a following church), the attempt must be made to understand to understand grace and discipleship again in their right relationship to each other. Always [and] clearly, the need of our church proves to be the one question: how can we live today as Christians?
Wohl denen, die schon am Ende des Weges, den wir gehen wollen, stehen und staunend begreifen, was wahrhaftig nicht begreiflich erscheint, daß Gnade teuer ist, gerade weil sie reine Gnade, weil sie Gnade Gottes in Jesus Christus ist.
[W: Wohl here picks up Psalm 1:1’s opening word, which means “blessed” or “flourishing” or “happy”. So these are Bonhoeffer’s beatitudes for the blessed person, as he moves into the rest of his book which goes through Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount.].
Blessed are those, who are already at the end of the way we wish to go, [who] stand and grasp with wonder what truly appears incomprehensible: that grace is costly, precisely because it is pure grace, because it is the grace of God in Jesus Christ.
Wohl denen, die in einfältiger Nachfolge Jesu Christ von dieser Gnade über-wunden sind, daß sie mit demütigem Geist die alleinwirksame Gnade Christi loben dürfen.
Blessed are those, who in simple-minded following of Jesus Christ are overcome by this grace, that they with humble spirit may praise the grace of Christ alone (that was at work).
Wohl denen, die in der Erkenntnis solcher Gnade in der Welt leben können, ohne sich an sie zu verlieren, denen in der Nachfolge Jesu Christi das himmlische Vaterland so gewiß geworden ist, daß sie wahrhaft frei sind für das Leben in dieser Welt.
Blessed are those, who in the knowledge of such grace can live in this world, without losing oneself to it; [Blessed] are those for whom, in following Jesus Christ, the heavenly Fatherland has become so certain that they truly are free for life in this world.
