After reflecting on how “cheap grace” came about from a misunderstanding of the Protestant doctrine of “grace alone saves us”, Bonhoeffer now laments over the carnage that “cheap grace” instead of costly discipleship has wrought upon the evangelical church. May we heed his warnings even today.

Aber wissen wir auch, daß diese billige Gnade in höchstem Maße unbarmherzig gegen uns gewesen ist? Ist der Preis, den wir heute mit dem Zusammenbruch der organisierten Kirchen zu zahlen haben, etwas anderes als eine notwendige Folge der zu billig erworbenen Gnade?
But do we also know, that this cheap grace has been merciless against us in the highest measure? Is the price that we today have to pay with the collapse of the organised church, something other than a necessary follow-up of grace too cheaply acquired?
Man gab die Verkündigung und die Sakramente billig, man taufte, man konformierte, man absolvierte ein ganzes Volk, ungefragt und bedingungslos, man gab das Heiligtum aus menschlicher Liebe den Spöttern und Ungläubigen, man spendete Gnadenströme ohne Ende, aber der Ruf in die strenge Nachfolge Christi wurde seltener gehört.

The proclamation and the sacraments were given cheaply; an entire people christened, confirmed, absolved, unsolicited and unconditionally; sanctuary was given, out of human love, to scoffers and unbelievers; streams of grace were offered without end, but the call to the strict discipleship of Christ became seldom heard.

It has become true of us, that the sins of the fathers are afflicted upon the children until the third and fourth generation (lit: member, link). Cheap grace was very unmerciful to our evangelical church.
