Ist ein Ende des Lockdown nicht in Sicht? Vielleicht. Aber es gibt ein Ende von Bonhoeffers Kapitel über die teure Gnade. There may not be an end to lockdown in sight, but at least there is an end to Bonhoeffer’s chapter on costly grace this week.

Es konnte ja auch nicht anders kommen, als daß der betrogene schwache Mensch sich im Besitz der billigen Gnade auf einmal stark fühlte und in Wirklichkeit die Kraft zum Ge-horsam, zur Nachfolge verloren hatte. Das Wort von der billigen Gnade hat mehr Christen zugrunde gerichtet als irgendein Gebot der Werke.
This (a person who is taught cheap grace and abandons true discipleship of Jesus) could not have happened otherwise, than that the deceived weak person, once in possession of cheap grace for himself suddenly felt strong, yet in reality had lost the power for obedience, for discipleship. The word of cheap grace has bankrupted [lit: brought to ground] more Christians than any commandment of works.
Wir wollen nun in allem folgenden das Wort für diejenigen ergreifen, die eben darin angefochten sind, denen das Wort der Gnade erschreckend leer geworden ist.
We want now in all [that] follows, to offer (lit: take) a word for those, who are challenged by this very thing, for whom the word of grace has become horrifyingly empty.
Es muß um der Wahrhaftigkeit willen für die unter uns gesprochen werden, die bekennen, daß sie mit der billigen Gnade die Nachfolge Christ verloren haben und mit der Nach-folge Christ wiederum das Verständnis der teuren Gnade.
It must be spoken for the desire for truthfulness [and] for those of us, who confess, that with cheap grace they have lost the discipleship of Christ, and with the [loss of] discipleship of Christ in turn [lost] the understand of costly grace.
