„Und da Jesus vorüberging, sah er Levi, den Sohn des Alphäus, am Zoll sitzenund sprach zu ihm: Folge mir nach! Und er stand auf und folgte ihm nach“ (Mk.2,14).
“And when Jesus passed through, he saw Levi, Son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax booth and said to him: “Follow me!” And he got up and followed him” (Mark 2:14)
Der Ruf ergeht, und ohne jede weitere Vermittlung folgt die gehorsame Tat des Gerufenen. Die Antwort des Jüngers ist nicht ein gesprochenes Bekenntnis des Glaubens an Jesus, sondern das gehorsame Tun.
The call goes out, and without any further explanation [lit: mediating factor], the obedient action of the one who is called follows. The answer of the disciples is not a spoken confession of faith in Jesus, but obedient action.
Wie ist dieses unmittelbare Gegenüber von Ruf und Gehorsam möglich? Es ist der natürlichen Vernunft überaus anstößig, sie muß sich bemühen, dieses harte Aufeinander zu trennen, es mußetwas dazwischentreten, es muß etwas erklärt werden. Es muß unter allen Umständen eine Vermittlung gefunden werden, eine psychologische, eine historische.
How is this immediate juxtaposition [lit: opposite, counterpart] of call and obedience possible? It is to natural reason exceedingly offensive; [reason] must make an effort to separate this hard combination, something must intervene, something must be explained. In all circumstances an explanation [lit: mediating factor] must be found – [perhaps] a psychological, a historical [one].
Man stellt die törichte Frage, ob nicht der Zöllner Jesus schon vorher gekannt habe und daher bereit gewesen sei, auf seinen Ruf hin zu folgen. Eben hierüber aber schweigt der Text hartnäckig, es liegt ihm ja gerade alles an demgänzlich unvermittelten Gegenüber von Ruf und Tat. Psychologische Begründungen für die frommen Entscheidungen eines Menschen interessieren ihn nicht.
One raises the silly question, whether the tax collector had not already known Jesus before, and was therefore prepared, to follow his call. But this is precisely [about this] that the text stays stubbornly silent, since it is indeed all about the completely unmediated juxtaposition of call and action. Psychological reasons for the pious choices of the person do not interest him.
Warum nicht? Weil es nur eine einzige gültige Begründung für dieses Gegenübervon Ruf und Tat gibt: Jesus Christus selbst. Er ist es, der ruft. Darum folgt derZöllner. Die unbedingte, unvermittelte und unbegründbare Autorität Jesu wird in dieser Begegnung bezeugt. Nichts geht hier voraus, und es folgt nichts anderesals der Gehorsam des Gerufenen.
Why not? Because there is only one valid reason for this juxtaposition of call and deed: Jesus Christ himself. It is He who calls. Therefore the tax collector follows. The unconditional, unmediated and unchallenged (lit: ungrounded) authority of Jesus is attested in this counter. Nothing comes before, and nothing follows other than the obedience of the called.
