Der dritte versteht die Nachfolge wie der erste als allein von ihm zu leistendes Angebot, als eigenes, selbstgewähltes Lebensprogramm. Er fühlt sich aber im Unterschied zu jenem berechtigt, auch seinerseits Bedingungen zu stellen.
The third understands discipleship, like the first, as only an offer to be made by him, as his own self-chosen program of life. He feels, however – in difference to the latter – entitled, even on his part to set conditions.
Damit verwickelt er sich in einen vollkommenen Widerspruch. Er will sich zu Jesus stellen, aber zugleich stellt er etwas zwischen sich und Jesus: „Erlaube mir zuvor.“ Er will nachfolgen, aber er will sich selbst die Bedingungen für die Nachfolge schaffen. Die Nachfolge ist ihm eine Möglichkeit, zu deren Verwirklichung die Erfüllung von Bedingungen und Voraussetzungen gehört.
With this he entangles himself in a complete contradiction. He will stand himself to Jesus, but at the same time he puts something between himself and Jesus: “Permit me first”. He wants to follow, but he wants to create for himself the conditions for discipleship. Discipleship is for him a possibility, of which the implementation involves the fulfilment of conditions and prerequisites.
So wird die Nachfolge etwas menschlich Einsichtiges und Verständliches. Erst tut man das Eine, und dann das Andere. Es hat alles sein Recht und seine Zeit. Der Jünger selbst stellt sich zur Verfügung, hat aber damit auch das Recht, seine Bedingungen zu stellen. Es ist offenbar, daß in diesem Augenblick Nachfolge aufhört, Nachfolge zu sein.
Thus discipleship becomes something humanly of insight and of understanding. First one does the one, and then the other. It has all insight and understanding. It has of everything its right and its time. The disciple himself makes himself at disposal, but has with that also the right, to state his conditions. It is revealed, that at this moment discipleship ceases, to be discipleship.
