Sie wird zum menschlichen Programm, das ich mir einteile nach meinem Urteil, das ich rational und ethisch rechtfertigen kann. Dieser dritte also will nachfolgen, aber schon indem er es ausspricht, will er nicht mehr nachfolgen. Er hebt durch sein Angebot selbst die Nachfolge auf; denn Nachfolge verträgt keine Bedingungen, die zwischen Jesus und den Gehorsam treten könnten.
[By saying “permit me first”, discipleship] becomes a human program, that I divide up after my judgement, that I can justify rationally and ethically. This third [disciple] then wants to follow, but already in him saying it, he no longer wants to follow. He himself cancels [lit: picks up] through his offer, discipleship, because discipleship tolerates not conditions which could come between Jesus and obedience.
Dieser dritte gerät also nicht nur mit Jesus, sondern schon mit sich selbst in Widerspruch. Er will nicht, was Jesus will, und er will auch nicht, was er selbst will. Er richtet sich selbst, zerfällt mit sich selbst, und dies alles durch das: „Erlaube mir zuvor.“ Die Antwort Jesu bestätigt ihm im Bilde diesen Zerfall mit sich selbst, der die Nachfolge ausschließt: „Wer die Hand an den Pflug legt und sieht zurück, der ist nicht geschickt zum Reiche Gottes.“
This third person is not only in conflict with Jesus, but also with himself. He does not want, what Jesus wants, and nor does he want, what he himself wants. He judges himself, falls to pieces by himself, and this all this by the [saying]: “Permit me first”. The answer of Jesus confirms to him this self-destruction with an image, which excludes discipleship: “Whoever puts his hand to the plough and looks back, he is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”
