Nachfolgen heißt bestimmte Schritte tun. Bereits der erste Schritt, der auf den Ruf hin erfolgt, trennt den Nachfolgenden von seiner bisherigen Existenz. So schafft sich der Ruf in die Nachfolge sofort eine neue Situation. In der alten Situation bleiben und nachfolgen schließt sich aus. Das war zunächst ganz sichtbar so. Der Zöllner mußte den Zoll, Petrus die Netze verlassen, um hinter Jesus herzugehen.
Discipleship/following means to do certain steps. Already the first step, which takes place upon the call, seperates the follower from his previous existence. Thus the call to discipleship immediately creates for itself a new situation. To remain n the old situation and discipleship are self exclusive. This was initially quite visible. The tax collector [must leave] the booth, Peter must leave the nets, to go after Jesus.
Es hätte ja nach unserm Verständnis auch damals schon durchaus anders sein können. Jesus hätte dem Zöllner eine neue Gotteserkenntnis vermitteln und ihn in seiner alten Situation lassen können. Wäre Jesus nicht dermenschgewordene Sohn Gottes gewesen, so wäre das möglich.
It could have, according to our understanding, indeed even then already been different. Jesus could have conveyed the tax collector a new knowledge-of-God and left him in his old situation. If Jesus had not been the incarnate Son of God, this would have been possible.
Weil aber Jesus der Christus ist, darum mußte es von vornherein deutlich werden, daß sein Wort nicht eine Lehre, sondern eine Neuschöpfung der Existenz ist. Es galt, mit Jesus wirklich zu gehen. Wen er rief, dem war damit gesagt, daß für ihn nur noch eine einzige Möglichkeit des Glaubens an Jesus besteht, nämlich die, daß er alles verläßt und mit dem menschgewordenen Sohn Gottes geht.
But because Jesus is the Christ, therefore it had to be clear from the outset, that his word is not a teaching, but rather a new creation of existence. It was valid, to really go with Jesus. Whoever he calls, to him it is said, that for him there stands only one possibility of faith in Jesus, namely this, that he leaves everything and goes with the incarnate Son of God.
