Bonhoeffer now shows what a misuse of “only the believer obeys” (without also understanding “only the obedient [enter the place where they] believe” results in, pastorally.

Von hier aus dürfen wir nun einen Blick tun in die christliche Seelsorge. Es ist für den Seelsorger von großer Wichtigkeit, daß er aus der Kenntnis beider Sätze spricht.
From here we may now get (lit: make) a view of Christian pastoral care (lit: soul care). It is for the pastoral care, of great importance that one speaks out of the confession of both statements [“only the believer is obedient / only the obedient believe”].
Er muß wissen, daß die Klage über den Mangel an Glauben immer wieder aus bewußtem oder schon nicht mehr bewußtem Ungehorsam kommt, und daß dieser Klage allzu leicht der Trost der billigen Gnade entspricht. Dabei bleibt aber der Ungehorsam ungebrochen, und das Wort von der Gnade wird zu dem Trost, den sich der Ungehorsame selbst zuspricht, zu der Sündenvergebung, die er sich selbst erteilt. Damit aber wird ihm die Verkündigung leer, er hört sie nicht mehr.
He must know, that the lament about the lack of faith always comes from conscious or no-longer-conscious disobedience, and that this lament is all to easily met by the comfort of cheap grace. But the disobedience remains unbroken, and the word of grace becomes the comfort which the disobedience awards to himself, the forgiveness of sins which he gives to himself. But with it the proclamation becomes empty to him, he hears it no more.
Und ob er sich tausendmal die Sünden selbst vergibt, vermag er doch nicht an die wirkliche Vergebung zu glauben, eben weil sie ihm in Wahrheit auch gar nicht geschenkt worden ist. Der Unglaube nährt sich an der billigen Gnade, weiler im Ungehorsam beharren will. Das ist eine häufige Situation in der heutigen christlichen Seelsorge.
And even if he forgives his own sins a thousand times, he still is not able(?) to believe in real forgiveness, precisely because, in truth, it was not even given to him at all. The unbeliever nurtures himself in cheap grace, because he wants to insist upon disobedience. That is a common situation in today’s Christian pastoral care.
