In ihr wird die Situation gegeben, in der Glaube möglich wird und wirklich existiert. Also nicht es gibt, sondern Er gibt dir eine Situation, in der du glauben kannst. In jene Situation gilt es zu kommen, damit der Glaube rechter Glaube und nicht Selbstbetrug sei. Gerade weil es allein um das rechte Glauben an Jesus Christus geht, weil der Glaube allein das Ziel ist und bleibt („aus Glauben in Glauben“, Römer 1,17), ist diese Situation unerläßlich.
In it [the action of obedience] the situation is given in which faith becomes possible and really exists. Thus it is not it, but rather He gives you a situation where you can believe. It is valid to come to that situation, so that faith becomes true faith and not self-deception. Precisely because it is about right faith in Jesus Christ alone, because the goal is and remains faith alone (“from faith to faith”, Romans 1:17), this situation is essential.
Wer hier allzuschnell und allzu protestantisch protestiert, der muß sich fragen lassen, ob es nicht die billige Gnade sei, für die er spricht. Denn in der Tat können die beiden Sätze, wenn sie nur nebeneinander stehen bleiben, dem rechten Glauben nicht zum Anstoß werden, während freilich jeder für sich allein ein großes Ärgernis sein muß.
Those who here too quickly and too Protestantly protest, he must allow himself to be asked, whether it not be cheap grace, for which he speaks. Indeed in the action of the two sentences (“Only the believer is obedient”, and “only the obedient one believes”), because they only remain side by side, cannot be an offence to the right faith, while admittedly each must be a great nuisance on its own.
Nur der Glaubende ist gehorsam – das ist dem Gehorsamen im Glaubenden gesagt; nur der Gehorsame glaubt – das ist dem Glaubenden im Gehorsamen gesagt. Bleibt der erste Satz allein, so wird der Glaubende der billigen Gnade, d. h. der Verdammnis ausgeliefert; bleibt der zweite Satz allein, so wird der Glaubende dem Werk, d. h. der Verdammnis ausgeliefert.
“Only the believer is obedient” – that is said by the obedient in faith; “only the obedient believe” – that is said by the believer in obedience. If the first statement remains alone, then the believer becomes [of] cheap grace; i.e. delivered to damnation; if the second statement remains alone, then the faith is a work, i.e. delivered to damnation.
