Du beklagst dich darüber, daß du nicht glauben kannst? Es darf sich keiner wundern, wenn er nicht zum Glauben kommt, solange er sich an irgendeiner Stelle in wissentlichem Ungehorsam dem Gebot Jesu widersetzt oder entzieht.
Do you lament yourself, that you cannot believe? No one should be surprised if he does not come to faith, so long as at any point in knowing disobedience he defies or evades the commandment of Jesus.
Du willst irgendeine sündige Leidenschaft, eine Feindschaft, eine Hoffnung, deine Lebenspläne, deine Vernunft nicht dem Gebot Jesu unterwerfen? Wundere dich nicht, daß du den heiligen Geist nicht empfängst, daß du nicht beten kannst, daß dein Gebet um den Glauben leer bleibt! Gehe vielmehr hin und versöhne dichmit deinem Bruder, laß von der Sünde, die dich gefangenhält, und du wirst wieder glauben können!
Do you not want some sinful passion, an enmity, a hope, your life plans, your reason, not to submit to the commandment of Jesus? Do not be surprised, that you do not receive the Holy Spirit, that you cannot pray, that your prayer for faith remains empty! Go rather and reconcile yourself with your brother, leave from the sin which imprisons you, and you will be able to believe/have faith again!
Willst du Gottes gebietendes Wort ausschlagen, so wirst du auch sein gnädiges Wort nicht empfangen. Wie solltest du die Gemeinschaft dessen finden, dem du dich wissentlich an irgendeiner Stelle entziehst? Der Ungehorsame kann nicht glauben, nur der Gehorsame glaubt.
If you wish to reject God’s commanding Word, then you will also not receive his gracious Word. How should you find the fellowship of that, which you yourself knowingly elude at any point? The disobedient can not believe, only the obedient believe/have faith.
[W: I’m noticing that just as Nachfolge in German is not easily translateable as either following or discipleship, Glauben is not so easily to distinguish between faith and belief. In English there are distinctions, but what about in German?]
