“Nachfolge” im Lockdown (Tag 49)

Bonhoeffer continues to distinguish faith that leads to obedience, and the “first” obedience that enables faith.

Um der Uneigentlichkeit der Rede vom Gehorsam als einer Folge des Glaubens willen, um des Hinweises auf die unauflösliche Einheit von Glauben und Gehorsam willen muß nun dem Satz, daß nur der Glaubende gehorsam sei, der andere gegenübergestellt werden: Nur der Gehorsame glaubt. Ist dort der Glaube die Voraussetzung des Gehorsams, so ist hier der Gehorsam die Voraussetzung des Glaubens. In genau derselben Weise, in der der Gehorsam Folge des Glaubens genannt wird, ist er auch Voraussetzung des Glaubens zu nennen. Nur der Gehorsame glaubt.

For the sake of inauthenticity of speaking of obedience as a consequence of faith, for the reference of the irresolvable unit of faith and obedience, the statement that “only the believer is obedient”, must now be contrasted [with] the other: “Only the obedient believes”. As there, faith is the prerequisite of obedience, then here obedience is the prerequisite of faith. In exactly the same way, in that obedience is called the consequence of faith, it is also to be called the precondition of faith. Only the obedient believe.  

Es muß Gehorsam geleistet werden gegen einen konkreten Befehl, damit geglaubt werden kann. Es muß ein erster Schritt des Gehorsams gegangen werden, damit Glaube nicht frommer Selbstbetrug, billige Gnade werde. Es liegt an dem ersten Schritt. Er ist von allen folgenden qualitativ unterschieden. Der erste Schritt des Gehorsams muß den Petrus fort von den Netzen, aus dem Schiff heraus, muß den Jüngling aus dem Reichtum führen. Nur in dieser neuen, durch den Gehorsam geschaffenen Existenz kann geglaubt werden.

Obedience must be given (lit: achieved) to a concrete command, so that faith is possible. A first step of obedience must be taken, so that faith does not become pious self-deception [or] cheap grace. It is the first step that matters. It is qualitatively different from all [the steps] to follow. The first step of obedience must lead Peter away from the nets, out of the ship, [it] must lead the young man out of wealth. Only in this new existence, created by obedience, can faith be possible.

Today’s section is really helpful. Bonhoeffer explores what the relationship between faith and obedience is.

Es ist eine schwere Einbuße an biblischer Treue, wenn wir den ersten Satz ohne den zweiten lassen. Nur der Glaubende ist gehorsam, das meinen wir zu verstehen. Der Gehorsam folge ja dem Glauben, wie die gute Frucht dem guten Baum, sagen wir dann. Erst ist der Glaube, dann erst Gehorsam.

It is a severe loss of biblical faithfulness, if we leave the first statement without the second. “Only the one who believes is obedient”: [is] what we think we understand. The obedience follows belief, as good fruit [and] the good works, we then say. First is faith, then obedience.

Soll damit nur dies bezeugt sein, daß allein der Glaube rechtfertigt und nicht das Tun des Gehorsams, so ist das allerdings die notwendige und unumstößliche Voraussetzung für alles weitere.

Should this only be to testify that faith alone justifies and not the practice of obedience, then this is the necessary and indisputable prerequisite for everything else.  

Sollte aber damit irgendeine zeitliche Bestimmung gegeben sein, daß erst geglaubt werden müsse und später der Gehorsam folge, so werden Glaube und Gehorsam auseinandergerissen, und es bleibt dann die höchst praktische Frage offen, wann der Gehorsam anzufangen habe. Der Gehorsam bleibt vom Glauben getrennt.

But should this be made some temporary clause that first it must be possible to believe and later obedience follows, then faith and obedience are torn apart, and it the highly practical question remains then open, when obedience is to begin. Obedience remains separated from faith.

Um der Rechtfertigung willen müssen ja Glaube und Gehorsam getrennt werden, aber diese Trennung darf niemals die Einheit beider aufheben, die darin liegt, daß Glaube nur im Gehorsam existiert, niemals ohne Gehorsam ist, daß Glaube nur in der Tat des Gehorsams Glaube ist.

For the sake of [the doctrine of] justification, faith and obedience must be separated, but this separation must never cancel out the unity of both, which lies in the fact, that faith only exists in obedience, is never without obedience, [and] that faith only is faith in the practice of obedience.

Die Gefahr der Unterscheidung einer Situation, in der geglaubt werden kann, von einer solchen, in der nicht geglaubt werden kann, ist groß.

The danger of the distinction of a situation in which it is possible to believe, from one which it cannot, is great.

Es muß dabei ganz klar sein, daß es erstens niemals in der Situation als solcher liegt oder erkennbar ist, welcher Art sie ist. Allein der Ruf Jesu Christi qualifiziert sie als Situation, in der geglaubt werden kann.

It must be quite clear, that firstly, never is it in the situation as such, or recognisable what type it is. Only the call of Jesus Christ qualifies it as a situation, in which it can be believed.

Zweitens ist die Situation, in der geglaubt werden kann, niemals vom Menschen aus herauszustellen. Nachfolge ist kein Angebot des Menschen. Allein der Ruf schafft die Situation.

Secondly, the situation in which it is possible to believe, never comes out from people. Discipleship is no human offer. Only the call creates the situation.

Drittens enthält diese Situation niemals in sich selbst einen eigenen Wert. Allein durch den Ruf ist sie gerechtfertigt.

Thirdly, this situation never contains in itself a worth of its own. Only through the call is it justified.

Schließlich und hauptsächlich ist auch die Situation, in der geglaubt werden kann, bereits selbst immer nur im Glauben ermöglicht.

Finally and principally is also that the situation, in which it is possible to believe, is already itself only ever made possible in faith

Der Begriff einer Situation, in der geglaubt werden kann, ist nur die Umschreibung des Sachverhalts, in dem die folgenden zwei Sätze gelten, die in gleicher Weise wahr sind: Nur der Glaubende ist gehorsam, und nur der Gehorsame glaubt.

The concept of a situation, in which it is possible to believe, is only the description of the circumstances, in which the following two statements apply, which are equally true: Only the one who believes is obedient, and only the obedient one believes.

Vorher war das anders. Da konnten sie als die Stillen im Lande unerkannt in ihrer Arbeit leben, sie hielten das Gesetz und warteten auf den Messias. Jetzt aber war er da, jetzt erging sein Ruf. Jetzt hieß glauben nicht mehr stille sein und warten, sondern mit ihm gehen in der Nachfolge. Jetzt löste sein Ruf in die Nachfolge alle Bindungen um der einzigen Bindung an Jesus Christus willen. Jetzt mußten alle Brücken abgebrochen werden, der Schritt in die unendliche Unsicherheit mußte getan werden, um zu erkennen, was Jesus fordert und was Jesus gibt.

Before, it was different. They (Levi, Peter) could live as the quiet ones in the land, unrecognised in their work, they kept the law and waited for the Messiah. But now it was, now his call went out. Now to believe was no longer to be silent and wait, but to go with him in discipleship. Now his call to discipleship loosed all ties, for the purpose of the only tie to Jesus Christ. Now all bridges must be burnt, the step into infinite uncertainty had to be done, to recognise what Jesus demands and what Jesus gives.

Levi am Zoll hätte Jesus wohl haben können als einen Helfer in allerlei Not, aber er hätte ihn nicht erkannt als den einen Herrn, dem er sein ganzes Leben in die Hand legen soll, er hätte nicht glauben gelernt. Es muß die Situation geschaffen werden, in der Jesus der menschgewordene Gott geglaubt werden kann, die unmögliche Situation, in der alles auf eines gesetzt wird, nämlich auf das Wort Jesu.

Levi at the booth could well have had Jesus as a helper in all kinds of trouble, but he would not have recognised him as the one Lord, to whom he should lay his whole life into the hand, he would not have learned to believe. The situation must be created, in which Jesus the incarnate God can be believed, the impossible situation, in which everything becomes placed on one [thing], namely the word of Jesus.

Petrus muß aus dem Schiff heraustreten auf das schwankende Wasser, um seine Ohnmacht und die Allmacht seines Herrn zu erfahren. Wäre er nicht herausgetreten, so hätte er nicht glauben gelernt.

Peter must step out of the boat from the stormy water (Mt 14:23-33), to experience his powerlessness and the omnipotence of his Lord. If he had not stepped out, he would not have learned to believe.

Die völlig unmögliche, ethisch schlechthin unverantwortliche Lage auf dem schwankenden Meer muß herausgestellt werden, damit geglaubt werden kann. Der Weg zum Glauben geht durch den Gehorsam gegen den Ruf Christi. Der Schritt wird gefordert, sonst geht der Ruf Jesu ins Leere, und alle vermeintliche Nachfolge ohne diesen Schritt, zu dem Jesus ruft, wird zur unwahren Schwärmerei.

The fully impossible, ethically totally irresponsible situation on the stormy sea must be highlighted, so that it can be believed. The way to belief comes through obedience to the call of Christ. The step is demanded, otherwise the call of Jesus goes into the void, and every supposed discipleship without this step, to which Jesus calls, becomes untrue infatuation(?).

“Nachfolge” im Lockdown (Tag 45)

Mit dem ersten Schritt ist der Nachfolgende in die Situation gestellt, glauben zu können. Folgt er nicht, bleibt er zurück, so lernt er nicht glauben.

[By taking] the first step, the follower is placed in the situation to be able to believe. [If] he does not follow, [if] he remains behind, then he does not learn to believe.

Der Gerufene muß aus seiner Situation, in der er nicht glauben kann, in die Situation, in der allererst geglaubt werden kann. In sich hat dieser Schritt keinerlei programmatischen Wert, er ist gerechtfertigt allein durch die Gemeinschaft mit Jesus Christus, die gewonnen wird.

The one who is called must [go] from his situation, in which he cannot believe, into the situation in which he can first(?) believe. In itself, this step has no programmatic worth, it is justified only by the communion with Jesus Christ, who is gained.

Solange Levi am Zoll sitzt oder Petrus bei den Netzen, so lange mögen sie ihren Beruf redlich und treu tun, solange mögen sie alte oder neue Gotteserkenntnissehaben, aber wenn sie Gott glauben lernen wollen, so müssen sie dem menschgewordenen Sohn Gottes folgen, mit ihm gehen.

As long as Levi sits at the booth, or Peter [stays] with the nets, they may do their job (lit: calling) honestly and truly, they may have old or new knowledge-of-God, but if they want to learn to believe God, then they must follow the incarnate Son of God, to go with him.
